Insomnia: What Causes
It?

Insomnia
Not
many people know it but insomnia is actually divided into two main types: the primary insomnia and the secondary
one. When dealing with primary insomnia, it means that this sleeping disorder isn’t caused by any other health
problems. The secondary insomnia, on the other hand, is related to other issues, like medical condition,
medications, substances people consume, or pain. The most common causes for this sleeping disorder
are:
Certain
substances like alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine. These substances are known to contain stimulants that keep the
brain active for longer run. When people consume caffeine in the evening, they may have difficulties sleeping
later on. Alcohol is known to act as sedative, but it prevents certain sleep stages that allow deep sleep
so people tend to wake in the middle of the night when they consume alcohol.
- Stress.
People have to deal with daily activities; from work, school, relationship, and other issues – like health
and family. The problems related to these elements can make them have difficulty to sleep well. Sometimes
big event like divorce, losing the loves ones, and losing jobs can also lead to stress.
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Medications.
Some medicines may contain caffeine and other stimulants that can affect the sleeping quality. Some
medicines cause the consumers to suffer from quite often urination, which can disturb their sleeping
time.
- Changes
in work and schedule. The body has its own circadian rhythm that can control the sleeping cycle: when to
sleep and when to wake up. When people have works that can ‘wreck havoc’ on the rhythm, they may suffer
from insomnia. People with constantly changing working shift – day and night, flight attendants, or
travelers may be affected by the different sleeping schedule.
- Medical
condition. People who have medical issue where they experience constant pain, may suffer from this sleeping
disorder.
- People
who eat too much near their bed time. They tend to experience discomfort around the stomach and experience
heartburn.
Insomnia: The
Effects
When
people suffer from insomnia, it means that they don’t have enough qualified sleeping time. The body needs time
to recover and to rest. Insomnia will destroy that resting period, so it’s no wonder that people who has this
sleeping disorder will experience:
- Irritability.
People who don’t get enough sleep will easily get upset and cranky.
- Sleepiness.
- Difficulty
to focus and concentrate. This can affect their performance at work or school. If they’re operating heavy
machines, they need to be careful as they may experience accidents.
People
need to seek out help from the professional so they can go back to their normal routine. They need to know the
main core of the problems and the exact cause so they can find the right treatments and cure for their
insomnia.
Summary : If
people want to treat insomnia, they need to know the exact causes because it can really affect their
productivity and ability to work and concentrate.
